How do task sections work?

Organize tasks into sections your workspace defines — for stages or teams. One section is Blocked.

Updated 2026-10-08

Sections are the columns you see in Kanban view and the groupings you see in list view. Your workspace defines what they mean, whether that's a workflow stage or a team. Priority is its own field on the task.

Using sections

  1. Open Tasks in Kanban or list view.
  2. Drag a task into a different section to move it — for example, from In Progress to Done.
  3. In list view, tasks are grouped under their section header; you can usually collapse a section to focus on the rest.
  4. In list view, tap + on a section header to create a task in that section without scrolling to the top.

Managing sections

Admins can add, rename, reorder, or remove sections from the Tasks settings for a group or workspace, depending on how your workspace is set up. Changing a section's name doesn't move the tasks inside it — they stay right where they are.

The Blocked section

  1. Every workspace has a Blocked section. Owners and admins can reorder it from Settings → Manage Task Sections. They cannot delete it.
  2. Drag a task into Blocked, or pick Blocked from the section menu on the task.
  3. If the task has no blocker and no reason yet, FabricLoop asks for one before the move completes. See How do task blockers work?.

Tips

  • Keep the number of sections small enough that Kanban stays scannable — three to six columns usually works better than a dozen.
  • If you need a different lens on the same tasks (by assignee, by due date), that's what switching to list or calendar view is for — sections don't need to cover every angle.
