How do I assign a task?

Assign an owner so everyone knows who is responsible.

Updated 2026-08-13

Open the task and set the assignee field — that person becomes the owner and shows up on their personal task list.

Steps

  1. Open the task, either from a list/board view or by clicking it wherever it's referenced.
  2. Click the assignee field and pick a teammate from your workspace.
  3. The assignee is notified, and the task now appears in their own task views.

Reassigning

Open the same field and pick someone else at any time — the previous assignee is notified of the change, and the task's history keeps a record of who owned it and when.

Tips

  • Assigning a task doesn't remove it from the group or channel it belongs to — it just adds an owner responsible for getting it done.
  • Priority is a separate field. See How do I set a task's priority?.
  • If nobody's assigned yet, the task still shows in shared views like the group's list or board — assigning it just makes ownership explicit.
