How do parent tasks and subtasks work?

Attach a task under one parent, or break it into subtasks, up to three levels deep.

Updated 2026-10-08

Open the task, choose Add in Structure, and pick Parent or Subtask. A task has one parent. A chain stops at three levels. ## Add a parent or a subtask

  1. Open the task.
  2. In Structure, tap Add.
  3. Choose Parent to put this task under an existing task, or Subtask to add work underneath it.
  4. Search for the task. For a subtask, you can also type a title and create a new one.
  5. Open the parent from its row. Use the menu on that row for Change parent or Remove parent.
  6. Tap × on a subtask to unlink it. The task stays in the workspace. Unlinking does not delete it.

What a new subtask keeps

  1. A new subtask copies the parent's groups.
  2. It starts in the parent's section.
  3. If the parent is in Done or Blocked, the subtask starts in a normal section instead.

Tips

  • Three levels is the limit: a parent, this task, and its subtasks. FabricLoop will not add a fourth, and a task cannot be its own parent.
  • Subtask rows show Done or a percent complete. Open the row to work on that task.
  • Priority, blockers, and labels are separate from the parent link.
