Notification preferences work at two levels: a workspace default for every channel, and per-channel overrides (including mute) for the ones that need different treatment.
Set workspace defaults
- Open Settings → Notifications.
- Under What to notify you about (on the web, this section is called Channel notifications), set the picker — Channels & groups on iPhone, iPad, and Mac; Notifications on the web — to All new messages, Mentions only, or Nothing.
- Optionally turn on Suppress @channel and @here if those broadcasts are too noisy.
- Keep Replies to threads you follow on if you want follow-up in threads you have joined.
New channels inherit this default until you override one.
Override or mute one channel
- In Messages, open the channel’s menu and choose Change notifications, or Mute for a one-tap mute.
- Pick All new messages, Mentions only, or Nothing, and turn Mute this channel on if you want it out of the unread badge.
- Review overrides later under Settings → Notifications → Exceptions to the defaults. Tap Reset on a channel or Unmute on a muted thread.
On the web, the channel Notifications tab also links to Workspace defaults and exceptions.
Push and email
- On the same Settings → Notifications screen, use the Push and Email toggles for each type (direct messages, mentions, tasks, events, and summaries).
- Types that do not support a delivery method hide that toggle — Daily Summary and Weekly Summary are email-only.
- On iPhone, turn on system alerts from the same screen if banners are blocked.
Tips
- Mute stops the Messages badge; Nothing stops push for that channel. Mentions can still appear when you open a muted channel.
- Notification choices are yours alone. Muting does not change anything for other members.
