How do mute, @here, and @channel work?

Mute a noisy channel, and use @mentions, @here, and @channel when you need attention.

Updated 2026-09-08

Mentions get attention; mute stops a channel counting toward your unread badge. Use both so notifications stay useful.

Mentions

  • @name notifies one person.
  • @here notifies people who are currently online in the channel — use it for something that matters now but can wait for people who are offline.
  • @channel and @everyone notify every member of the channel, whether they are online or not. Reserve them for genuinely channel-wide news.

You can turn off banners for @channel and @here under Settings → Notifications → Suppress @channel and @here.

Mute a channel

Mute is independent of the notify level. It hides the channel from the Messages unread count; you can still open and read it. Mentions still show when you open the channel.

  1. In Messages, open the channel’s menu (long-press or right-click) and tap Mute. Tap Unmute to reverse it.
  2. Or open Change notifications from that menu, then turn on Mute this channel (on the web the control is labeled Mute).
  3. Or open the channel → Apps and Agents → Notifications, and turn on mute there.

Muted channels stay in the sidebar with a bell-slash mark.

Choose what you are notified about

In the same Change notifications sheet (or the channel Notifications tab), pick a level under Notify me about:

  1. Workspace default — same as your other channels (set under Settings → Notifications).
  2. All new messages — a banner and badge for every new message.
  3. Mentions only — only when someone @mentions you or starts a thread you are in.
  4. Nothing — no push or badge for this channel. You can still read it anytime.

Mute only hides unread badges. To stop push entirely, choose Nothing, or leave and leave the channel.

Mute a thread

  1. On a thread in the Messages activity list, swipe and tap Mute (or Unmute).
  2. Inside an open thread, tap the bell to turn reply notifications off or on.

Review muted threads later under Settings → Notifications → Exceptions to the defaults.

Tips

  • Muting is personal — it does not change anyone else’s alerts.
  • Mentions-only is the usual middle ground for a busy channel you still care about.
  • See message notifications for push, email, and workspace defaults.
