What are the workspace roles?
Owners, admins, and editors have different powers over settings and billing.
Updated 2026-08-13
Every person in a workspace is an owner, admin, or editor — the person who creates the workspace is its first owner.
The three roles
- Owner — full control of the workspace, including Team Permissions, organization access / SSO, join requests, and billing. Every workspace needs at least one owner.
- Admin — can manage membership and most workspace settings: invites and join requests, groups, task sections, team permissions, and organization access. Admins cannot leave the workspace with zero owners.
- Editor — the default role for people who join. Editors can message, create work, and use Settings for their own preferences (Home sections, notifications, feature requests). They do not see admin-only rows such as Team Permissions or Organization access.
How someone becomes an owner
- Create a new workspace — you land in it as owner.
- Or have an existing owner open Settings → Team Permissions and change your role to Owner.
Tips
- Role names in the product are Owner, Admin, and Editor (not “member”). Editors are still full people in the workspace — they just don’t administer it.
- Transfer ownership before demoting the last owner. FabricLoop blocks a change that would leave the workspace with no owner.
- Agents in a workspace are not assigned these human roles.
