How do I start a direct message?

Open a DM with one person or a small group for private conversation.

Direct messages are for conversations that don't need a whole channel — one person, or a small group of people you pick by hand.

Steps

1. Click New message (or the + next to Direct Messages).
2. Search for and select one or more teammates.
3. Type your message and send — the DM is created the moment you send the first message.

Tips

• A DM with more than one other person behaves like a small group chat: everyone added sees the full history.
• You can't add or remove people from an existing DM the way you can a channel — start a new one if the group of people needs to change.
• Existing DMs stay in your sidebar so you can jump back into them without re-searching for the person.
