When should I use News instead of a channel message?
Use News for announcements that should stay findable; use chat for discussion.
Updated 2026-08-13
Use News when the announcement itself matters and should stay easy to find later. Use a channel message when the point is to start a conversation.
Use News for
- Company or team-wide announcements
- Anything you'd want someone to find weeks later by browsing, not searching
- Updates with images, video, or a headline worth calling out
Use a channel for
- Back-and-forth discussion
- Time-sensitive coordination that doesn't need a permanent record
- Anything scoped to a small group where a full "story" format is overkill
Tips
- A good pattern is posting the announcement in News, then dropping a short link to it in the relevant channel so people who live in chat still see it.
- If you find yourself scrolling far back in a channel to find an old announcement, that's usually a sign it should have been a News story.
